Boston United survived a second half scare to advance to the first round proper of the FA Trophy at the expense of 10-man Colwyn Bay.

Marc Newsham fired the Pilgrims in front on 27 minutes before Colwyn's John McKenna was sent off for elbowing Mark Jones on the stroke of half-time.

With a man advantage, Boston were coasting and pressing for a second goal when Rob Hopley hauled the Welsh side level with a smart finish after bursting into the box.

Rather than try and hang on for a replay on Tuesday night, Bay threatened to grab a second goal until, not for the first time, Newsham saved the day.

The Pilgrims' leading scorer fired home a sublime effort in the 82nd minute to put the Pilgrims back in front.

And the gloss was put on the victory when substitute Charley Sanders fired home his first senior goal in added time.

United will discover their first round opponents on Monday.
