Facebook campaign to change mosque site
Opposing Facebook pages have been set up supporting and denouncing the building of a new mosque in Lincoln.
People living in Church Drive and Boultham Park Road have set up a group called 'Stop the Lincoln mosque being built on Church Drive'.

A model of the proposed Mosque
Member Ian Durrant said: "It was started by one of the residents to give people a chance to support us.
"There is no animosity towards the Muslim population, we support them, they need a mosque, but we don't want 100 cars parked on our street, there's no room for them."
The site proposed for the mosque is the former St Matthew's Church, off Boultham Park Road, which was burned to the ground in the early hours of Saturday, August 30, last year.
Planning permission to convert the church, which had stood empty since 2000, into a mosque was granted to the Muslim Association of Lincoln in July.
Following the fire, the group applied for permission to build the two-storey structure on the site.
But residents say congestion and parking are their main worries and want a new site found for a mosque.
For more on the two groups, see Monday's Echo.

“I am studying architecture in Lincoln and I am proposing that the new Mosque should be put in the historical area of Lincoln, near to the Jews house on Steep Hill, just below the Cathedral.
Back when Lincoln was a Roman city centuries ago, the Jews were not even allowed in the city limits after dark by our dominant Christians ancestors, and were eventually banished from the entire country in 1250 under punishment of death. Surely it is time for people just to accept other peoples beliefs and get on with it!”

“I hope that whoever at the council gives the go ahead for this is held accountable for their incompetence and fired.
Enough of this B S just put it on the outskirts of town end of arguments it will be there to go to without upsetting anyone then these people will blend in with everyone no one gets upset end of story.
Don`t force this on people who have lived there all there life who don`t want it.
Let it be built on the outskirts then people will build around it if they want to.”

“Bradley,
Not sure which news stories you are referring to but there are many Muslim countries around the world where Christian churches have existed for many years and continue to do so quite happily. Your PS about the Koran is pure scaremongering.
Concern about traffic is a legitimate concern, but how many meetings are currently held at the Grandstand each week? How often is this going to be an issue for residents? This is something that can be addressed either by the Council monitoring the situation or imposing restrictions in the area - or by negotiations with the Mosque itself.
That said I like P Liever's idea of a conspiracy theory.”

“To be or not to be will be the final decision from those serving on the Planning Committee at Lincoln City Council.
But what people should be aware is that how long will the Grandstand remain as a community centre and used as a mosque for our muslim brethren on Fridays?
And why is this will be a reply from some?
It is a known fact that community centres are in the firing line at City Hall to be closed down to save so called money.
And why are conservative councillors wishing to change the use of the Grandstand?
This goes beyond of bringing horse racing back for Lincoln.
So why is City Council not offering an alternative site for a mosque?
It makes you wonder!”

“"Islam promotes peace rather than war - however extremist on all sides quote religous writings to try to justify their actions.
There are many Christian churches and schools in Muslim states across the world." - Gedge

“¿Islam is a religion, not a race, so for a start you can all quit banging on about racism. Also, the anti-Islam sentiment coming from some Christians is a bit rich.¿ - Emma
Hi Emma, I agree with your first point ! however, as for your second one; can you find me anywhere where Jesus (N.T. bible), Buddha, Gandhi, Dali-lama etc taught ¿human-on-human violence¿ ?
God bless - Brad
ps # strange how there is someone missing from that list of peaceful prophets”

“I drive down Boultham Park Road eveyday and to have mor cars on the road would be unrealistic. it is fairly congested anyway. As for the mild racism, you can blame the media for that, they don't exactly 'big muslims up'”

“FFS, Islam is a religion, not a race, so for a start you can all quit banging on about racism. Also, the anti-Islam sentiment coming from some Christians is a bit rich. Don't like the idea of some religion from the Middle East barging its way in and riding roughshod over your beliefs? Now you know how we Pagans feel about Christianity!”

“Steve's comments are measured and thoughtful in my view. A mosque IS clearly inappropriate visually and functionally to the Boultham Park area. It is not racist to want to preserve quiet areas as they are - it's why planning is regulated and Civic Societies legitimately exist.”

“¿Does it fit in with the local community as from what I can see it isn't the immediate local community using it¿ That will soon change. As with any many other areas that have religious buildings, community landscapes change and evolve around them, why wouldn¿t they?
Parking is the obvious issue here as is the fact that many Lincoln people don¿t, and never have as long as I¿ve lived here (35 years), had exposure to large communities of other nationalities other than the dominant white British community that is here today, suddenly land on their door step.
Lincoln people haven¿t grown up and integrated with large Muslim communities; and let¿s be honest people are scared of what they don¿t know and lack of tolerance for many is the correct term.
I also work away from Lincoln all week, UK and Offshore included, and have worked with many different cultures and in many different countries and I know full well what is acceptable and what isn¿t and if my English accent and ways of living offends people, I soon get the message and deal with it.
For a lot of people in Lincoln, antireligion and theophobia in a form is present and to try and change that is wrong, people don¿t take to change very well and if people don¿t want a mosque on their door step, for whatever reason, then who is someone to force it upon them. I don¿t have a problem with Lincoln having a mosque, far from it I have many close friends and colleagues from different religions and nationalities who¿d agree with me, but building one in this area is NOT the right place for a number of reasons and needs a rethink.”
