Five families from Lincoln have been given an early Christmas present - keys to their new council homes.

The families have moved into the five new town houses on Wellington Street, off Carholme Road  - the first council houses to be built by the City of Lincoln Council for 20 years.

  1. NEW TENNANTS: Lenny Holt and Kylie Hallam with their children Lewis Hallam-Holt, 4 and Aaliyah Sky Hallam-Holt, 16 months.

The properties have six solar panels generating around 1,380kwh per year for each home which should save each family more than £300 per year in energy bills.

The homes also include energy monitors, high-spec insulation, windows and doors and state-of-the-art heating systems.

The development forms part of the council's priority to increase the amount of affordable homes within the city, with the number of people struggling to get mortgages and afford high private rental prices.

Planning permission for the homes was granted in October 2011, with building work starting in March 2012.

“Surely it would be better to build more houses with a basic design than fewer state of the art ones but never mind, its only taxpayers money.”

“How sad ....... that Clifford Newton should think he's seen so much of the UK's social housing that he's in a position to generalise.

And not only the external appearance of people's homes but on the interiors too.

My words - he must have been been around.

In one, swift and easily composed generalisation, he condemns 'most people' in social housing as slum makers and dwellers.

    That's very sad.

It's facile, unjustifiable and, ultimately, worthless to jump from the particular to the general.

And, in the very nature of these things, the generalisation will be wrong just as often as it's right ..... or, more likely, I imagine, the truth will lie somewhere in between.

It's also very easy to write people off - and it would be so much better if people didn't .....”

“I sincerely wish the family good luck, a very Merry Christmas, future happiness and success. However, please forgive my scepticism. I just hope they keep their new home looking nice. Just look around everywhere. Most social housing (not all!) look like a tip within twelve months inside and out because it's been provided. Buildings don't make slums - people do!”

“Good news indeed. I'm often a cynical burger on here but an early Happy Christmas to the Hallam-Holts and to the other families.”

“Brilliant news - just brilliant! For this family and others to follow, it's to be hoped.

Good quality, Council provided housing back on the agenda after all the years when councils were effectively prohibited from building the social housing the country so badly needs.

No more to be said, really.”
