Detective Constable Ian Grice, the investigating officer, said: “The man and woman from Gainsborough were travelling on the 8.27pm Lincoln to Sheffield service with their three children and grandchild when they left the train at Gainsborough.

“A group of six men who were also on the train left with them and, as they made their way out of the station through a subway, one of the men urinated.

“The woman questioned the group’s indecent behaviour in front of their young children, which was met with a torrent of abuse. Ignoring the group, the family walked past through the subway.

“The man’s abuse continued, at which point the father turned around as the group set upon him, punching him several times in the face, knocking some of his teeth out. The violence continued as they assaulted the woman pulling her hair back, dragging her to the floor, and repeatedly punched her.”

The men were seen to run from the area and made off from the station in a grey minibus taxi.

Officers were swiftly called to the station and the injured couple were taken home.

Four Gainsborough men, aged between 35-45, were arrested for actual bodily harm and common assault. They have all been released on police bail until mid-July pending further police enquiries.

Detectives are continuing their enquiries into the incident, including viewing any CCTV in the area and are hoping for any witnesses to the assault to come forward.

DC Grice added; “This was a violent and despicable attack on two parents in front of young children.

“The train was very busy at the time and we believe there may have been many people who saw a group of men acting in a disorderly way.”

“A good argument for fitting CCTV in all cabs, to protect the drivers as well as identify offenders.

Perhaps one of the offenders will be let off anyway. To leave a train, with a toilet, and pee in a subway suggests he has a mental age below 5.”
