A FUNDRAISING event has been planned in a bid to raise the profile of two churches under the threat of closure.

Frampton's St Michael's Church and St Mary's Church are in danger of closing due to dwindling numbers.

  1. St Mary's

Both St Mary's Church and St Michael's Church in Frampton are in need of financial help

And to try and save the churches, a committee has formed in an attempt to attract more people.

Committee members Rex and Val Halgarth have organised the first fundraising event, a Rock 'n' Roll Party at Blackfriars Theatre on January 18 at 7.30pm featuring Lincolnshire's Status Quo tribute band.

Mr Halgarth said: "The school, post office and shop closed years ago, now the village pub. Are our churches next? And do the villagers care?

"540 magazines were delivered to more than 1,000 residents in October and December asking for help and ideas, which fell of deaf ears. Not one phone call or offer of help was received.

"The people expect the churches to be there for their needs such as christenings, weddings and funerals but unless something is done in the near future they will not be there. Wake up Frampton and show some concern."

Committee members are hoping people in the village will offer support in way of volunteering or organising events at the church. Discussions are still under way for more events that could include an art exhibition and party in the park.

Mr Halgarth added: "We want to organise events to attract all the families. The churches are beautiful and it would be a shame to lose them.

"The committee is working tirelessly to do something to attract people to the church not only on a Sunday to services but all through the year."

Tickets for the Rock 'n' Roll party which will feature local singer Dave Logan are £10. Limited tickets are available from Blackfriars Box Office on 01205 363108 or by calling 01205 723579.

“Quote from the article ""540 magazines were delivered to more than 1,000 residents in October and December asking for help and ideas, which fell of deaf ears. Not one phone call or offer of help was received."

Every religion and church that is not supported and 'blessed' by God will shut down. In the end only the religion that supported and blessed by Him will continue to be prosperous and vital.

So look for this true religion, active and vital, strong with high moral values. It can be found in 239 lands and territories around the world and whereever you are,. there is a caring congregation of them within reach.”

“Sorry Armyoldsweat yes, if the congregation have left then let developers turn them into homes. Not totally ideal as the public lose access to them but at least they don't fall into disrepair and lost forever.”

“I think Oldernwiser has hit the nail on the head. The Church has become so outdated many are turning their back on it. Bigotry and the alienation of large parts of the community will only lead to it's further decline. This leaves the problem of many architecturally magnificant historic builings (churches) falling into disuse because many do not want to be associated with the views the owners hold. The Church of England is massively wealthy so need to be seen to protect the (our) heritage they control.”

“While sympathising with the Halgarth's regarding the two Frampton churches I fear, as with scores of other unused religious buildings around the country, their efforts will come to nought. That said, many old derelict churches have been successfully converted to domestic and commercial use while still retaining their original exterior appearance. The one in Burgh-le-March is an excellent example.”

“What a sad time our villages are having .....

There has been plenty of research into the decline of villages and their facilities and it appears that the closure of the primary school is a speedy determiner of the fate of a village.

Once that has gone, younger people with, or hoping to start, a young family tend to move away and the social heart of a community has gone.

Which is one reason why using cost alone as the determiner of the fate of small village schools is short-sighted. The village declines, the shop goes, the Post Office goes, the pub goes, churches and chapels follow and so on ... the most highly visible and quantifiable 'cost' is reduced - but wider 'value' was overlooked (or maybe not een considered.

As for the Church of England - it doesn't help itself very much does it?

Years of arguing and agonising over equality for women and sexuality have left it seeming out of touch with broader society, so broader society has voted with its feet and its purse.

It's true that many people want the church to be there for the hatching, matching and despatching episodes in family life - but there are very good alternatives (better, some would say) and, since it appears that the good people of Frampton have made that choice, maybe we'll have to accept that these two churches must simply wither on the vine ....

Unless, of course, the 'Big Society' can come to their rescue .... if the fate of so many churches around the country is anything to go by, I fear they're unlikely to be the beneficiaries of a miracle - no matter how hard they pray.”
