Being kind to the environment doesn't have to end even after you die, according to two Lincolnshire eco-entrepreneurs.

Chris Neave, 54, and Jonathan Cartwright, 37, opened Brightwater Green Burial Meadow, near Owmby-by-Spital, off the A15 north of Lincoln, in October last year.

And it has proven to be a great success.

There have so far been two green burials at the new facility – where non-embalmed bodies are buried in coffins made of bio-degradable materials such as wicker and cardboard – and a burial of ashes is planned for March.

The concept is to intersperse burial plots with trees and wildflowers to create a haven for wildlife.

Graves can be marked with a simple granite stone, while ashes can be buried in an individual plot in a biodegradable casket, box or other suitable container, laid to rest under a memorial tree, or scattered in a designated area.

Mr Neave, whose family has farmed the surrounding land for more than 100 years, said people were becoming more conscious of how their life and death affect the environment.

"Ten-to-15 years ago it was considered to be slightly alternative, however, now the thought of spending one's eternity as part of an attractive landscape is becoming very appealing," he said.

"We are not eco-warriors – we are businessmen – but we feel this is a service which people want.

"This is a way of people giving something back to nature and becoming part of a growing landscape full of attractive woodland and meadow."
