Hawk flies in as Housham adds to his Gainsborough Trinity midfield

STEVE HOUSHAM believes one of the most exciting young players in non-league is now on the Gainsborough Trinity rosta.

The Blues' manager has added midfielder Terry Hawkridge to his squad after the former Carlton Town player signed a one-year deal at the Northolme.

Hawkridge, who was a nominee for the Evo-Stik League Division One (South) player of the season award, becomes the second player in a week to join the club and follows  20-year-old left back Josh Wilde, who signed from Buxton FC.

"Terry is a very exciting young prospect," said Housham.

"I knew of the player when I was at Brigg Town, but with about £20 a week to spend we couldn't really afford him.

"He has bundles of pace and skill and, to be honest, there were a lot of clubs having a look at him, not just at this level, but also from higher up in football.

"I am delighted to get him to the club, he will be a good acquisition and a very useful addition to the squad.

"He is predominantly a wide player but he will give me options going forward.

"Terry likes to get on the ball and have a go at defenders. He will be exciting for the supporters and I will allow him to go out and express himself on the football pitch."

The 22-year-old is unlikely to be Housham's final signing during the closed season.

With the departure of club captain Gavin Cowan  and with centre half Andrew Boyce joining Lincoln City, the centre of defence at Trinity will need attention.

"Losing Gav and Boycey will leave us with big boots to fill," added the Trinity boss.

"But I have not gone out and started any panic buying and I won't start now.

"I will bide my time and make sure that the right players are brought to the football club. In the past the club has been guilty of bringing in league players who are stepping down a level or two and hoping for a steady pay-day.

"I want younger, hungry players who are going to work hard and be at Gainsborough for the right reasons.

"We do need a centre half and maybe even another  striker, but, like I have said, it will have to be the right type of player for the club."

Housham has scheduled in June 25 for the start of pre-season training and claims it will be the most important time of the year for his players.

"It is quite an early return to training, but one I think is important," he added.

"I want my players to be right and ready for the new season. My aim is to finish higher than last season and with more points on the board."
