FIVE years after it was left empty when Boston magistrates' court moved out, the town's historic Sessions House has finally been put up for sale.

Built in 1842, the listed building, which looks across to Boston Stump, has recently played host to staff from nearby Boston Library during its refurbishment, but other than that it has been unused since the court moved to Norfolk Street in 2005.

Its owner, Lincolnshire County Council, had previously said it could become offices and there had been some suggestions it may be used by community groups or as a museum.

However, the council has now decided to sell the building and has slapped a £250,000 price tag on it.

Four other county council-owned sites in Sleaford, Grantham and two in Gainsborough are also being put on the market as part of the authority's efforts to make financial savings.

Head of strategy Peter Bright said: "This property review started in 2006 with an examination of all of the county council's non-schools properties.

"This review is being implemented as part of the county council's new ways of working programme which will improve the quality of services and give value for money to customers.

"The current financial situation places added importance on the council's need to have an efficient property portfolio."

Labour group leader on the county council Cllr Rob Parker questioned the timing of the sale move.

He said: "We need to manage our properties correctly, so I partly agree with the sale.

"But when the market's down like it is at the moment, I'm not sure we will be able to get a good deal.

"I think they could have spoken to councillors and local people first to help create opportunities for community venues in some of our small market towns."
