The historic Brayford Pool in Lincoln should be renamed Lincoln Harbour, according to the city's harbour master.

Keith van Bergen revealed his idea during talks about the progress of future plans for moorings on the Brayford.

  1. Brayford Pool

His suggestion, raised at a Brayford Business Forum meeting, pays homage to the inland harbour's ancient heritage.

Mr van Bergen told the Echo: "I said at the meeting quite clearly that I personally would love to see it renamed as Lincoln Harbour."

Michael Armstrong, events manager at Lincoln Business Improvement Group, said: "Personally, I think the name should stick to what it is because people are familiar with it and it's been Brayford Pool for many, many years. Everyone is entitled to have ideas and opinions but Lincoln Harbour does not float my boat.

City councillor Neil Murray, who represents Carholme ward and is a director of the Brayford Trust, said discussions are ongoing about replacing all the old moorings with new ones, including visitor berths as part of the regeneration of the area.

"Renaming the Brayford Pool as Lincoln Harbour is an interesting idea but I doubt the name will ever change because of its history," he said.

“Just a thought, why's he called the Harbour Master should he not be the Pool Master”

“What planet is this person on. It has always been called "Brayford Pool" and it should remain the "Brayford Pool". This person obviously has too much time on his hands. I suggest if he does not like the name, then move !”

“"Why doesn't Keith van Bergen change his name to something English first before he spouts his silly ideas about messing with Lincolns old English names."

Why don't you try playing the ball rather than the man? The validity of an opinion has absolutely nothing to do with the name of the person expressing it. That a supposedly grown man would try to suggest otherwise is staggering.

So, if you have any valid counterpoints, let's hear them. Personally, I don't like the idea because it strikes me as being little more than change for change's sake. However, I would at least hold that opinion regardless of whether the proposal came from Keith van Bergen, John Smith or Mickey Mouse.”

I was responding to Lynn's post. You normally make more constructive and intelligent comments than that. It must be osmosis from Chimpy.""

I may be mistaken but I think I have seen your complaints about ratings before. If you don't care about the ratings, don't talk about them”

“Whilst the Harbourmaster is entitled to his view he needs to realise that Brayford Pool isn't just a harbour, it's a vital part of Lincoln's history going back centuries. There is a Lincoln history book called The City by the Pool for that very reason. It's iconic.

In fact in earlier days when the pool was much bigger, the Harbourmaster' office would have been under water! Brayford Pool it should remain.”

“It is not a Pool as the body of water does not stand still it flows.

Harbour hmm why would someone leave the Witham or the Navigation canal to shelter in a larger expense of water?

    Wharf is a better description.”
