Homeless and elderly people are turning up

Lincolnshire's

Accident and Emergency departments because they cannot get treatment elsewhere.

Consultant, Jai Pillay said A&E staff were seeing a growing number of elderly people with non-urgent conditions.

But they come to A&E as a last resort as there is nobody to care for them at home.

The distressing situations witnessed by doctors and nurses are recorded as 'social problems' at United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust's A&E departments.

From April to December 2008 the trust recorded 756 such incidents – a 13 per cent increase from the 670 cases recorded in the same period in 2007.

Mr Pillay said: "It is very sad that many elderly people who have had a minor fall then have to resort to coming to A&E as they cannot look after themselves at home.

"People who are homeless and don't have anywhere else to go also come in.

"A&E is for everyone but if everybody turns up the people who need us more urgently will get delayed."

The figures also show that bites and stings are down, alcohol poisoning is down but asthma attacks are up.

For a full breakdown of the figures, see Saturday's Echo.

“My elderly step mother ask for her local GP to visit her due to a medical problem. He failed to turn up so her husband rang again. A locum turned up, had no medical records for her, took one look, and sent for an ambulance.
The ambulance arrived and the doctor went somewhere else. The medics put her into their vehicle but the engine failed. Because there was no other ambulance available, the crew radioed in for a mechanic who came later to deal with the problem. This was while my step mother was inside the ambulance.
They took her to A and E at the hospital and left her to be seen.
She was still in her night dress and was not seen for a couple of hours despite the emergency and being 86 years old.
When she was seen ,the doctor took one look at her, decided that she was OK, and told her to go home.
She was left bewildered and confused of what to do.
She was advised to ring a neighbour to be picked up from hospital as all of the ambulances were being used elswhere.
When she eventually returned home, her husband ask what treatment she received and she said nothing.
Two days later, she was rushed to hospital with breathing problems but this time was admitted and is on oxygen. She is still there.
Who cares about the old folk anymore when they become ill.
Doctors don't visit - you have to go to them because they won't come to you (beyond three score years and ten)!
This happened in Westen Super Mare last week.”

“Wonder how many other mis facts you are going to use? I'll say this one last time, and hopefuly those who can't read can get a friend to explain it, the NHS do not give free treatment to people from other countries. We have a reciprical agreement with the EU so it balances out and we often claim payment from the country of origin. This is the case with people coming from overseas who are not within the EU. Believe me as I work with the chap whose job it is to do this.
As for migrants taking everything, that is your own view but has nothing to do with the NHS.”

“The obvious answer to this issue then is to have a Social Worker based in A&E for the "social problems"

“What about the migrants that come here and after a couple of months bring their children over that need very expensive surgery. I suspect this costs more than the migrants that 'don't use the service before they leave' put in!!!

I know of 2 cases of Lincoln migrants where they have purposefuly brought their children over to have treatment that costs in excess of £50,000!!! Cleft Pallet & Hole in the Heart. They weren't indured in their own country and so came here, worked for a few months, then brought their children over and went part time!!!

I get tired of all the 'they put in before they get the benefit' claims on here.

I have put in for 17 years and am watching it all disappear so that migrants can come, moan about Britain, Get their kids sorted out and then go home to their own country.

“"If you truly do have real evidence as to why Immigrants have much more consideration before Elderly and Homeless British, Born and Bred Citizens - then please elaborate! "

I don`t believe immigrants are getting preferential treatment. But, even the gov are now admitting, at long last, that migration is putting tremendous strain on resources..Therefore it is only realistic to expect that some Brits will suffer..

“"This is a FACT...I work for the NHS."

Sorry, but that's not a fact - facts are based evidence and supporting arguments; and I see no evidence or support to your claims there... do you?

Just because you are employed to work for one of the many branches for the NHS, it doesn't give you encyclopedic knowledge of politics in the public health system.

As for homeless not being in front of the 'long que', please elaborate what que this might be for?

When housing and benefits are concerned (money and shelter, the most important things to consider) - the homeless AND elderly get the best homes and the highest priority (usually having to wait years less than those who have a roof over their heads, no matter what squalor they live in), and that indeed is actually a fact - I'm on the housing list at the minute and have seen the information, and I know the benefits system after having to rely on them for a while due to illness.

My theory is that you have so many homeless and elderly in crisis because they themselves don't ask the questions, don't have the information as to what, why and how they are entitled to, wether it be health care, shelter or money - and this is even backed up by the government. There's been a lot of advertisements and campaigns recently for the elderly to make sure they are claiming as many benefits as possible - because many of those stuggling to pay their finances are not checking what they are entitled to.
Though, I will agree, much more support and means to find these types of important information should be more readily and commonly available without so much effort.
    -
Whilst the social and physical health care system could indeed be much, much better - that doesn't mean changes should only apply to the Elderly and Homeless - whilst these may be the groups most susceptible to vulernability, that certainly doesn't mean that they are ALL vulnerable.

The average healthy Joe or Jane - or the many young people with disabilities or long term illnesses can be just as, if not more vulnerable, for whatever reason.

If you truly do have *real* evidence as to why Immigrants have much more consideration before Elderly and Homeless British, Born and Bred Citizens - then please elaborate!”

“What many people fail to state is that the "Elderly" as you call them, were told when the NHS was first founded, that they would always be cared for, and thus they made no extra provision. It is no different to the claims on the Government being made by certain sections of investors in the credit crunch, saying that they were not told interest rates/shares/house values could go down as well as up. Has anybody noticed how many younger people claim from the Government all the time, having NEVER contributed to Society by taxes or anything else. How do you think the "Elderly" feel about that?”

“That is not fact! Thecouncil has failed to provide adequate care for the elderly but that has nothing to do with the immigrants. In fact it is interesting that you bring that up because although they may wel have paid into the economy all their lives the Elderly are now claiming back what they put in, however that has obviously all been spent. So now the immigrants are paying for the elderly health care because most leave before they need any treatment. In Lincolnshire this is especially true with the ageing population. This is just one theory but notice how I don't say it is the truth as you presume your answer is.”

“I dont blame the elderly and homeless one bit for turning up at A&E! The majority of them have probably paid taxes in there life's and are entitled to the same treatment as we are. Its not there fault that this government puts immigrants ahead of British citizens... Before you all start, this is a FACT...I work for the NHS.
If our government put the homeless at the front of the long que then the majority would no doubt find jobs and become tax paying citizens!I8 do however feel sorry for the staff who have to deal with this. They all do a very good job, but we dont complain enough..if we complained then the NHS would employ more staff on wards etc. Its hard as we dont want to be seen 'putting the work they do down' but I for one support this theory.
To all you elderly out there...Go to A&E....That's what you have paid all your life's for. And all you homeless out there keep going... I for one certainly would!”
