England women's coach Hope Powell linked with Grimsby Town job
England women's coach Hope Powell has emerged as a shock contender for the vacant Grimsby Town hotseat.
Lincoln City's League Two rivals dispensed with the services of their manager Mike Newell late on Sunday.

And while initial reports had highlighted the current list of probable applicants on the managerial merry go round, the Mariners could be on the cusp of setting football history by employing the first women manager.
Powell, who guided the England women's team to the final of the European Championships this summer, has been mooted in the past to be interested in taking over a Football League club.

“Oh my days, I hope Grimsby Town fans demand Hope Powell is not given an interview - who would want a succesful England manager in charge of their team. Not me that's for sure!”

“I really would not have a problem. Had we not already got Chris; I would not have turned my nose up at her appointment at Lincoln. If she can walk the walk and talk the talk, does her gender really matter? She has the badges and a level of experience that I am sure many other applicants do not, so why not. Grimsby or anyone else should be happy to get a professional in their field. Like anyone else, she would stand or fall by the results achieved on the field.”

“Well, she can't coach worse football than the current dribble that's going on there! Can't see the team taking to her, not least the fans! Perhaps they would if she was a mermaid... Or is that just a really bad pun ;-)”

“More logical than Chris Sutton Karl? But yeah fancy a Lincoln fan making a bad comment about Grimsby on the Lincoln City section of this website, the audacity of it!
If I could be bothered I would scan through Grimsby's website to scan for bad comments about Lincoln and check for validity, except I can't so I accept it and get on with life.”

“Martyn, North Hykeham, Why make such stupid comments! Granted we are nothing short of a terrible football club for the past ten years and I can handle the snide remarks from Scunthorpe as they have been fairly succesful in the past few years. BUT lincoln have done nothing and no better off than Grimsby, So keep your remarks to yourself until you have some success in your club. Grimsby been to Wembley 3 times and the Millenium Stadium in the last 11 years and thats with us on a downward spiral! Not to mention the big scalps we have had in those years. Why not give Hope a try, More logical than bringing in a inexperienced manager like Windass. Shes done brilliantly with the England women. I draw a line at her signing any of the women she coaches tho,;) lol”

“To be honest I don't have any problem with this. She seems switched on and has been as successful as she can be...but I can't see the players accepting her and (judging by some of the comments here) neither will some of the fans”

“OK, so how many england managers have taken England to the final of ANY tournament! That's FAR to much success for Grimsby to handle!”

“An imaginative move, but there are lots of 'barriers' to be overcome, not least how the players will react to working for a woman (no matter how good she might be) plus things like her being in the dressing room, etc. Interesting to see how this develops.”
