THIRTY minutes free parking will help support the vitality of a market town, according to councillors.

Horncastle Town Council discussed car parking in the town after hearing about a task and finish group being run by East Lindsey District Council who are reviewing car parking across the district.

The debate saw fresh calls by the town council to try to get ELDC to introduce the first 30 minutes as free parking.

Councillor Sandra Campbell-Wardman who is also a district councillor said: "Councillor Fiona Martin and myself suggested the first half an hour free but I think East Lindsey are worried about the loss of any revenue. I pointed out it would make no difference as most of us risk it anyway. Let's be honest, if we are going for a paper or to the bank, we are not going to put money in."

The review could also see Sunday and Bank Holiday charges introduced.

Councillor Campbell-Wardman added: "Businesses are already having a hard time. We don't want added car park charges in this current climate."

Councillor Richard Barker said there should be more of a level playing field across East Lindsey but Councillor Wardman pointed out that Skegness has much later car park charges until 9pm.

Councillor Bill Aron said: "Half an hour free is not a new idea, that representation from the council has gone in year in and year out. A level playing field is a bit more than just 6pm-9pm. Places like Woodhall Spa and Coningsby do not pay for parking at all."

Councillor Barker said the decision would effect every business in the town. "We need as much help as we can, otherwise we will end up as a ghost town if we are not careful."
