Housham: Gainsborough Trinity players want to win for Peter Swann

The Gainsborough Trinity squad will dig deeper than ever this weekend – and they'll do it for club chairman Peter Swann.

Trinity manager Steve Housham says the players have been affected by Swann's announcement this week that he will be standing down at the end of the season.

And Housham believes that the affection held for Swann within the squad will spur them on to greater heights, starting with this Saturday's trip to Vauxhall Motors.

"This could actually be the turning point in our season," said Housham.

"The chairman has helped every single player in this squad and I think they will want to repay him with some good results on the pitch.

"The chairman pulled me to one side on Monday and told me of his decision and we are all very sorry to hear he will be going.

"But he has done a great job for this football club and there is a lot of affection for him here.

"I will address the players with that in mind and I am sure they will want to give the chairman a perfect send-off and produce a successful season.

"Although he has announced he will be standing down after the season, he is still thinking about improving the club and we are still looking to bring in another striker, because he knows that scoring goals has been a problem."

Trinity travel to Cheshire on Saturday still searching for their first win of the new season.

Two defeats and two draws have left Housham's side, who reached the play-off final last season, second from bottom in the Blue Square Bet North table.

"Our results haven't been what we wanted at the start of the season, but we have actually only played poorly once, the first game against Gloucester," added Housham.

"Last season we only managed one point against Vauxhall Motors and there is no doubt it will be a tough place to go. Obviously we would have liked to have won all four games, but this is football and things never really work out as you plan.

"Having reached the play-off final last season, I think we are a big scalp for teams now, but we will go again and hopefully we will get a result for the chairman and for the fans."
