Vocalist Marlene Verplanck, a distinctive name with an equally distinctive voice and musical pedigree, will be appearing with the John Pearce Trio at the Lincoln Drill Hall on Saturday 2nd March. She is without doubt one of the finest interpreters of the Great American Songbook.

This elegant, quietly spoken American woman, is transformed when she steps on stage into an accomplished, clear, emphatic and focused singer of popular jazz songs. She has that special quality, that few vocalists possess, of transfixing her audience from the very first note to the last.

This is perhaps not surprising, because as a young singer she did a short stint in the Dorsey Orchestra as well as backing vocalists of the calibre of Frank Sinatra and Mel Torme. She also featured with the Glenn Miller Orchestra on 'In a Digital Mood', the first big band CD to go Gold.

At the Drill Hall, courtesy of organiser Lincolnshire Jazzpac's NewJazz5 (and later at The Old Clee Club, Grimsby on 13th March) she will be supported by one of the very best and tested jazz trios in the UK with John Pearce on piano, Paul Morgan on double bass and Bobby Worth on drums. The New York Times described Marlene Verplanck as "may be the most accomplished interpreter of popular material performing today". Throughout her long musical career, she has stuck to her guns, paying loving care to the great standards and new songs from our finest composers, while ignoring mediocre popular tunes. She got her start in the big-band business, as a very young vocalist with Charlie Spivak and Tex Beneke. During a brief stint with the last Dorsey Brothers Orchestra, she met her future husband, musician-arranger the late Billy VerPlanck. In time, Marlene Verplanck became one of the nation's busiest studio singers, backing up vocalists ranging from Frank Sinatra and MelTorme to Kiss. Following appearances on Alec Wilder's historic National Public Radio series, 'American Popular Songs,' in the 1970s, she emerged as a leading solo performer. Appearances at Carnegie Hall, Michael's Pub and the Rainbow Room brought rave notices, and national TV shows, including Entertainment Tonight, The Today Show and CBS's Sunday Morning, featured profiles of the increasingly popular singer.
