STRIKER Jefferson Louis will return to Gainsborough Trinity after a permanent deal at Darlington fell through.

Louis (pictured) has been on loan with the Quakers since October, with the deal running out today. But the Blue Square Premier club have dropped out of a proposed permanent move for the much-travelled former Football League frontman.

"I don't want to go into the details why, but the permanent deal has fallen through," said Trinity chairman Peter Swann.

"Jefferson will come back to us after the weekend and we'll be talking to him and his agent next week to see where we go from here.

"It may be that other clubs may come in for him, or if not then he will come back into our squad and provide more competition for places."

Louis has scored twice for Trinity this season, netting in the opening day victory over Worcester and in the victory over Ilkeston Town, which has been scrubbed off after they went out of business.

He is likely to find himself well down the pecking order at the Northolme, with Ryan Kendall in superb form, while Luke Beckett and Leon Mettam are on the bench.

"It will be tough for Jefferson to get in at the moment," said Swann.

"We are playing with one up front and Ryan has been excellent for us.

"We've also got Leon, who was one of the top scorers in the league last season, on the bench, plus Luke, who was our top scorer last season.

"But we expect Jefferson to come back, work hard and try to push for a place in the side."

Trinity are away at Vauxhall Motors in the Blue Square Bet North today.
