Joe Dunderdale was the stand-out performer for Lincoln Wellington at the Anglian School Combined Events Championships.

In the senior boys' decathlon there were two Wellington athletes on the podium with Dunderdale taking second place with a new personal best points total of 5,538 – just 50 points short of a club record, held by Ian King, which has stood for more than 25 years.

This achievement was even more impressive considering Joe is in the lower year of the age bracket, competing against athletes older than him.

Coach Rob Lewis described Joe as "very talented".

"He (Joe) has made rapid progress over the last 18 months and I expect him to break the club record next year," said Lewis.

"Ian King is the current holder of the record and I can remember him from when I first joined the club. He was an incredibly talented athlete.

"With a further year in the same age group it should only be a matter of time before Joe beats Ian's mark."

Matt Houlden took third place in the same event with 5,502 points.

And this was a performance that was all the more creditable as he was still carrying a minor injury problem.

Despite wearing a support band though, he has still managed to compete with the seniors.

Another fantastic display came from Hannah Dunderdale, who set a new personal best in the intermediate girls' heptathlon. She is now ranked seventh in the UK.

The event provided a good warm-up for this weekend's English Schools Track and Field competition.

Other Wellington athletes produced some excellent results for the Lincolnshire team at the championships, staged in Chelmsford, Essex.

Also in the medals was Hannah Dunderdale in the intermediate girls' pentathlon.

Her score of 4,215 points for the runner-up spot was a new Lincoln Wellington record in her age group.

A further very creditable medal-winning effort came from Mary-Ann Phillips who finished in third place in the senior girls' pentathlon with 2,895 points.

Having concentrated almost solely on the sprints previously this could be the beginning of a new athletics direction for her.

In a highly competitive junior boys' pentathlon, Haran Dunderdale did very well to total 2,241 points and claim another new Wellington club record.

"Haran is a more of an endurance athlete compared to his older siblings, who are more explosive," said Lewis.

"I expect him to concentrate on his middle and long distance more over the coming year."

The fact that this only placed him seventh is an indicator of the quality of the competition.

Two Wellington athletes made the junior girls' pentathlon team and both found some very tough opposition.

Katie McMunn finished seventh on 2,443 points, with Sydney Cherrie not far behind her in 11th position with a score of 2,334.
