SKEGNESS was the host of the national Get Safe for Summer 2009 event.

Following the success of last year's regional event in the town, East Lindsey District Council was chosen as the national host by the Amateur Swimming Association.

The event at the Embassy Complex, was aimed at primary school pupils and their parents and was designed to complement the council's annual school water safety visits.

Activities were programmed throughout the day in the Embassy Theatre and Swimming Pool, Tower Esplanade and on the beach with more than 800 pupils, teachers and parents attending.

Children learnt the SAFE message, met Olympic and Commonwealth swimmers and took part in exciting life-saving exercises.

Representatives from the 999 and coastal rescue services were also present alongside Lincolnshire County Council, local councillors and officers from ELDC.

Melissa Wright, business development officer at ELDC said: "Get Safe for Summer was an excellent example of partner organisations working together to bring home the message in the summer, and all year round.

"We are dedicated to ensuring we can keep children safe, while having fun!"
