Larder charity so hungry for more supplies

A CHARITY is appealing for Harvest Festival donations to help sustain it through the winter months.

Once one of the most important dates in the rural churches' calendar, the festival traditionally involves bringing in food from allotments and gardens to distribute among the poor and senior citizens of the local community.

The Lincoln Community Larder prepares food parcels for people going through a time of crisis and relies on Harvest Festival donations to keep it going through to the new year.

Last year, the Larder made an urgent appeal to Echo readers who then donated generously with tinned goods, cereals and other staple foods.

Now, with Harvest Festival fast approaching, the Larder is asking for help again and told the Echo that donations are key to their continued work.

Larder trustee Tina James said: "We're spending around £250 a week on groceries which is such a lot of money, so any donations that mean we have to spend less are wonderful.

"This year we're after tinned goods, dried fruit and that sort of thing.

"Last year we had a massive response and we're still sitting on a soup mountain, while the baked bean donation lasted us until around June or July, which was great.

"Now, this year, we're hoping people will be generous again and donate more tinned goods, dried foods and that sort of thing.

"There's a real spirit of giving at this time of year and a good Harvest Festival donation can keep us in good stead for months.

"Obviously, Harvest Festival is a time when people make donations to their churches, but we're not particularly a church-going nation anymore so people can still get into the spirit of things by donating to us."

The Larder currently receives support from Sainsbury's and Branston Potatoes Ltd, with the latter delivering fresh potatoes every Friday.

Simon Telfer, HR and logistics director at Branston Ltd, said: "We support a number of local charities with regular donations of potatoes and they're always really well received.

"The Lincoln Community Larder does a great job helping out local families with food when they really need it, so we're happy to help them out."

Due to the importance of Harvest Festival donations, the Larder will be opening later from 2pm until around 5pm every Tuesday and Friday, from September 13 until October 21.

They are also able to arrange collections for any donations.
