Lincoln City's haircut craze: Our top ten of dodgy barnets
Lincoln City goalkeeper Paul Farman has laid the blame for the club’s current spate of quiff haircuts at the feet of his team-mate Dan Gray.
The Imps stopper, along with defenders Gray, Andrew Boyce, Sean Newton, midfielder Jon Nolan and youngsters Jordan Thomas and Conner Robinson all sported the shaved sides and quiff on top combo in the club’s team photo.
“My hair is bad at the minute, but it’s the in thing – it’s all about the quiff,” said Farman.
“Dan Gray had it last year, and it’s just carried on from there. It is all about back combs and hair spray at the moment.”
How does Farman’s hair rate against some classic footballing haircuts through the ages, though?
We pulled together this rouge gallery of 10 close shaves.
1 – Paul Farman
Farman has shaved in close round the sides and really gone to town with the wet look gel on his quiff to give it that extra rigidity. Solid, just like the Lincoln City defence.
2 – Abel Xavier
The defender’s shocking dyed white locks were a mainstay of the Premier League when he played for Middlesbrough. Yes, they were in Premier League at one point.
3 – Carlos Valderama
A favourite. Is it because his hair colour matches his Colombia shirt? Is it the natty little moustache, or just the fact it’s probably so big it has its own gravitational pull? Who knows, but we love it.
4 – Steve Thompson
His curly hair may be a bit greyer these days, but our Tommo has never turned his back on his classic 70s look. Here he can be seen sporting it alongside a lovely full-bodied moustache.
5 – Jason Lee
‘He’s got a pineapple on his head’. Poor Jason, this haircut has gone down in footballing folklore following the parody from Baddiel and Skinner’s Fantasy Football show. Fair play, to him, though. He went on to have a long and established career for teams including Boston United.
6 – Gervinho
Dreadlocks in a side parting. Probably the most eye-catching thing about his time at Arsenal.
7 – David Beckham
The leader of footballing fashion, we’ve plumped for this classic ‘Taxi Driver’ inspired Mohican look.
8 – Chris Waddle
Ignore the top of his head and just marvel and the quality of the mullet behind those ears. Luxurious.
9 – Andy Carroll
10 – Alexi Lalas
Ah, USA 94. How will we remember you? Diana Ross missing a penalty? England not qualifying? Ray Houghton scoring against Italy? Nope. It will be Alexi Lalas’s hair every day of the week.
What do you think? Who had the most hair-raising barnet in football?
