Lincoln College apprentice turned employee claims secret to success is hard work
Jessica Buchanan is using her story during National Apprenticeship Week to inspire and encourage others after gaining a fulltime employment, progressing from apprentice to employee. Jessica, who studied an Apprenticeship in Business and Administration Level 2 with Lincoln College, successfully secured a full time Administrator role at Aspire, Lincoln College's business training company. Her success, she says, is all down to working hard and determination.
21 year old Jessica had already tried a number of courses including A levels and hairdressing but she found she wanted to get kick start a career in an office environment and combine studying with earning a wage. She started her Apprenticeship in August 2011, and she says that it gave her the opportunity to gain valuable experience and skills which led to her gaining a job. "I'd applied for several Admin jobs before but without relevant qualifications or experience, it was proving really difficult."

Now Jessica wants to encourage other people who enjoy learning whilst working to consider apprenticeships, "You have to have a good work ethic, and be prepared to work hard, and manage your time to complete your studies. The course work is based on the tasks and duties you complete as part of your job, so what you are learning is relevant and you can apply new skills to your day job too."
Jessica is relishing her new role as admin assistant but is still looking towards the future and hopes to go onto do more training, but says she is grateful for her apprenticeship helping her to get where she is today "I want to help people be aware that it is an option, and that lessons aren't the only way of learning, apprenticeships are not the easy option, but you can get a lot out of them if you try hard."

“It's quite depressing that once companies would have given on the job training but people are now having to "study" and feel they have to have a qualification in a job that is basically common sense. Looking at the course description at Lincoln College for Level 1 of this course it is a full time course for one year which is excessive given the responsibilities that an admin assistant has. Welcoming visitors, making & receiving calls, communicating electronically...good grief. As far as Creating Business Documents is concerned, companies will already have document templates that are suitable for their own particular business and this will vary from one company to another. A year's course for what can be comfortably learned in a month with in-house training.”
