Lincoln engineer Jim Brown is hoping to mark his name in the

record books by helping to smash the world motorcycle land

speed record.

Mr Brown (37), from Lincoln firm Siemens, has quit his job

so he can devote all his time to creating what could be the

first British vehicle to set the record in 80 years.

Mr Brown, from Saxilby, together with another colleague from

Siemens and two men from another city firm Napiers are working

on creating the fastest ever "streamliner".

They have joined fellow engineers and a driver from York to

build from scratch what they hope will be a 400mph machine.

Mr Brown will manage the analytical engineering side of the

project, making sure that the bike has the performance to reach

the required speed.

The team hopes to race the Streamliner in either South

Africa or the famous Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, US.

They intend to beat the current record of 350.884mph set by

American driver Chris Carr in 2006 (click the video

screen above to watch the record being set).

"The only way we can make our vehicle faster is through more

power or better aerodynamics," said Mr Brown.

"Carr's engine was home-made. It had 550 horsepower. Ours

will have 750.

"It's a big step to give up my job but I believe it's worth

it."

land speed record, plus plans of the Streamliner, see Friday's
