Lincoln gets go-ahead for new technical college

“What a strange thing to say! What do you think a school is? No one is challenging the educational merits of this project, just pointing out the effect that it will have on the majority of children in Lincoln - so well done to those who clearly care about all our children. I wonder why there has to be a NEW school - why not just turn one of the existing schools into a UTC? The majority students who attend the new UTC will come from the existing schools within the city - do the arithmetic, one is bound to close!”

“Already secondary numbers are falling..." This is due population figures ie their are 11-16 year olds than when the schools were built.

If you are saying that individual schools are less full, this is true due to above, but there will be an increase next year as the school leaving age is going up to 17 and subsequently 18.”

“Specialisms in 9 GCSEs AND a technical specialism, alongside university status sounds superb, until you read that there are no entrance tests.

Are these places intended for genuine science and engineering students, or will they become a holding pen for for non-academic school avoiders?

Great for those lucky enough to go to the utc, though with 12 million pounds of our money to be spent on the premises it should be very nice. Tough for those who are in schools that are falling down with no hope of being repaired.

I hope that in a few years time we don't have another Gillilsnd situation, the Priory started as the lincoln school of science and technology - has a familiar ring to it.

“The problem over the last 15 years the focus has been on academic subjects and less on the practical and physics based subjects.

The wealth of this country was built on manufacturing, we need engineers and technicians who are going to invent, design, develop and build high end products that will put this county back on the manufacturing map.

This school will give its pupils a better chance of employment than those which send their pupils to Uni to do Media Studies or Journalism.”
