A girl from Lincoln has shaved her head to raise money for charity after losing her uncle to cancer.

Tanya Simpson, 20, from Lincoln shaved her shoulder length hair at ASDA supermarket on September 1 at 2pm raising around £300 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

A family history of cancer has meant Tanya lost her great grandma and uncle to the disease and she has also had to see her mum, Veronica Simpson, go through treatment for cancer cells.

Three years ago when Tanya's uncle died, Macmillan helped the entire family through the ordeal which has now encouraged her to give something back.

She said: "When I lost my uncle Macmillan not only helped my uncle but everyone around him, it helped my aunt get through it."

Shaving her head is a big commitment for Tanya whose hair was past shoulder length long and will take years to grow back.

"At one point I could sit on my hair, I've always had it long.

"I'm not nervous about the actual hair shaving but there are a lot of people watching.

"Everyone at university is supporting me, I don't know how people on the street will react but I've got my panda hat to wear as I'm thinking it might be a little cold on my head too," said Tanya.

Veronica Simpson has been helping her daughter raise money and is impressed by her sacrifice.

She said: "I'm very proud that she is doing this and it is showing people that it isn't all bad with the youngsters out there today, there are some good kids."

Not only has Tanya raised money for Macmillan but her hair is also being sent to be used to make a wig for cancer patients.
