A midwife hailed as an "absolute superstar" has scooped Lincoln's annual Midwife of the Year title.

Kayleigh Waugh, 24, works in the Nettleham and Bardney wards at Lincoln County Hospital and qualified as a midwife just two years ago.

Yet she impressed new mums so much with her kindness and calmness that she has been awarded the title as the Lincoln branch of the National Childbirth Trust's Midwife of the Year award for 2009.

A total of 151 of new mums and mums-to-be voted for the midwife they believed went beyond the call of duty.

And at a ceremony at the hospital's antenatal clinic on Friday, Miss Waugh was presented with prizes including £500 worth of complementary therapies.

Coordinator of the Midwife of the Year award and antenatal teacher, Jules King, said: "We set up the award to reward the unsung hard work that midwives do and to recognise midwives that go above and beyond the call of duty for parents.

"Midwives fulfil a very important role at a special time in parents lives.

"And the kind of midwife you get can make all the difference to how you feel about pregnancy, birth and early parenting."

“I don't know how you could choose just one midwife from the team at Lincoln to be the best. I've got three terrific kids and each one has been brought into the world by a different midwife. Each time it has all been perfect. My wife and I have been treated like old friends and my wife was given all the care and attention she needed. I'd like to congratulate Kayleigh Waugh on her well deserve award, kep up the good work, but if I had my way, everyone at the place would get one!!”

“I would just like to say that Jane Haywood delivered my baby in may and was fantastic as she knew i was so nervous and scared and she did a fantastic job in calming me down and delivered my baby with no problems at all. She was wonderful. And student midwife Debbie Benger stayed with me the whole time i was in labour which i was very much grateful for as last time i was left on my own which made me incredibly anxious. So my thanks is to these two incredible midwifes who made the birth of my daughter a wonderful experience.Thankyou so much”
