The Bowlo public house on Outer Circle Road will be given a dramatic facelift with the hope of bringing a major restaurant operator to the premises.

Planners have given the green light to Banks Long & Co to upgrade and modernise the building, which has stood empty for a number of years.

The building, more popularly known as the old Bowling Green public house, occupies a prominent location at the junction of Wragby Road and Outer Circle Road and is close to hundreds of homes and a wide range of businesses.

Plans are to provide around 3,500 square feet of trading space with the capacity to seat up to 200 people.

Suggested changes will give the building a more contemporary feel as well as providing improved car parking.

Work will be undertaken when a tenant has been found but it is hoped the plans will generate interest in the site.

Banks Long & Co director James Butcher said: “We believe that the future use of the building will be as a restaurant.

“This is an area of the city that has grown substantially in recent years with the arrival of hundreds of new homes on the 90-acre Bunkers Hill site north of the bustling Carlton Centre Retail Park and Neighbourhood Centre, which sits on the opposite side of Outer Circle Road.

“The intention is to undertake the work when we have found a tenant, so this will give us the opportunity to incorporate any specific design requirements of our occupier.”

Two self-contained apartments on the upper floors are included in the plans which can be included in the whole letting or let separately if not required by the tenant.

“Whilst I can appreciate the previous comments, I think that the change of name from The Bowling Green to the Bowlo in a way summed up the type of clientele it wished to attract. The building itself is in realistic terms quite attractive of its period and I suppose lends itself to the proposed development. The question regarding parking however is irrelevant as the Carlton Centre is literally just over the road and whilst, as is most land in this City, owned by the Co-op I am sure they would have no objection to increasing footfall (carfall) in the area.”

“I couldn't agree more Oldernwiser. So many people seem to do it these days; it's because of the sound of words such as could've, would've, should've that people then think it's 'of' instead of 've' which is itself a diminutive of 'have' as you quite rightly say.

Another annoying one is when people use the word 'loose' when they actually mean 'lose.'”

“and I can't help thinking that contributors should learn that it's 'could HAVE' and not 'could of' .......

The poor old English language, our Mother Tongue, gets such a mangling on this site.”

“Given that it is on one of the busiest junctions in Lincoln I would think vehicular access would also be an issue not withstanding the apparent lack of car parking as commented upon by Phil1W.

It is great the site will be reused but I also wonder if the 'Bowlo' has too much history not to be demolished and something imaginative built in its place.”

“Where will all these "customers" park. Whats left of the old "Bowlo's" car parking space would probably not be enough for the staff. The main parking area at the back is now occupied by a chippy, hairdressers and a pizza shop and there looks to be barely enough parking for these businesses.

It would be nice to see the Bowling Green back in use but I think its probably the wrong side of Outer Circle Road now.”
