The judges chose the Roman street for its historical assets and valuable place in the city's future.

Steep Hill's variety of independent outlets, entertainment and cultural events were said to make it an important regional destination.

The City of Lincoln Council and Lincoln Big Improvement Group were also praised for working tirelessly to preserve the popular thoroughfare.

Kevin Murray, chairman of The Academy of Urbanism, said: "Rising and turning gently as a connection between the city centre and Cathedral, Steep Hill has an immense historical quality. But it is not a place relying on its past for its future.

"Through the city council, a Business Improvement Group is energetically working with local business and residents allowing the street to respond to the changing economic and social pressures of today.

"The Academy believes this care for our historic urban fabric whilst looking to the future should be recognised and rewarded."

“Absolutely deserved. Now we need the City Council to take on a marketing graphic 'look' itself that says this is an historical city worth visiting. Other cities have managed this, but sadly I guess Lincoln is always held back by the carrot crunchers. Ironical that Cockburn Street is in Edinburgh that is one with this image 'look'. I know money is tight, but it could be done gradually.”

“Isn't it ironic that some people in Lincoln praise Steep Hill area for being old and historical but just a few days ago a thread was full of people that wanted to destroy the old City centre and replace it with a sterile and ugly shopping centre.”

“It's strange that people equate modernization with McDonalds? I think you miss the point of the place. Although I not one for these arty places its great to see it's not become the cloned high street of so many towns and cities in the UK.”

“I agree with Camelherder, because this photo does not do justice to Steep Hill, as it is not the most picturesque view.”

“The area needs modernising though, perhaps a mcdonalds should be built in the area.”

“The Echo could also have added photographs of the other two parts of Steep Hill so that everyone gets the full impact of why it won.”

“This award should be displayed in a venue close to the location such as the Visitor Information Centre so everyone can see it and not gather dust in some office in city hall.”

“Well deserved. As an American with a UK wife, have traveled all over England and visited all the tourist spots. Lincoln has a special feel, and Steep Hill is truly a gem for Lincoln and England.”
