Both of Lincoln's tourist information centres will be shut down from September – making the city the only major historic location in the country without a walk-in facility.

The centres, which are located in High Street and Castle Hill square are being sacrificed to make up for a shortfall in the City of Lincoln Council's budget.

The decision was made at a meeting of the authority's executive board in City Hall last night and will affect the jobs of 13 staff at the centres.

At the meeting council leader councillor Darren Grice said: "I am fully aware of the emotional arguments top keep the tourist information centres open but every day I get up and I have to make decisions about saving this money."

The centres will be replaced with a telephone and internet service and three roles will be created that will be ring-fenced for existing TIC staff.

The other 10 will be made redundant.

Other tourism and arts services will also be affected as the council seeks to offload the authority-run arts function to the Drill Hall and transfer its marketing duties to Lincolnshire Tourism.

For a fuller report of the meeting, see Tuesday's Echo.

“"I have received literature of hopefuls but were found out to be just paper candidates without bite or just standing for the sake of it."

To be honest, if someone round my way ran with the slogan "A vote for me is a vote for a paper candidate with no bite who just fancies the £4K a year expenses payment" I'd vote for them over the Labour/Tory/Lib Dem candidates. At least they're being honest.”

    “Yvonne:
So you are standing as a candidate for the next local council elections because you totally dislike Councillor Karen Lee.
From your comments it is showing that you will oppose Karen for what she is and believes.
If that is the case please state what you wish to do for Carholme Ward in your next posting which I am a resident of. For I wish to know without prejudice.
Please start your campaign now and say what needs changing. What are you going to do with the Grandstand for instance? Do you intend support community activity? What are you going to do in bringing community facilities for the urban village on Long Leys Road, in Carholme Ward?
How will you treat students living in the West End? What are you going to do with traffic congestion clogging up Carholme Road every working day? Do you wish to support some form of youth activity for youngsters living in the West End?
For years on end candidates have either knock on my door or have not bothered at all to ask me what I want and how they would go about it. I have received literature of hopefuls but were found out to be just paper candidates without bite or just standing for the sake of it. Some lived quite some distance away from the area and would not give their home telephones for contact.
Are you one of those paper candidates making waves without substance.
If you are one of them, residents and the people using this column making their comments, will expose your rantings.
I am pretty fed up with paper tigers with no bite.
And by the way, I am not Leftie and a member of the Monster Raving Loony Party, which I assume that you are.
The gaunlet has been thrown on the floor for your response!”

“It seems that the council don't actually understand the purpose of a TIC. Just because the tills might not ring in enough postcards and imps to cover the cost of running it doesn't mean they don't generate more than there cost effectiveness. Ultimately the council will lose out as the businesses that will be negatively effected will not be paying rates, less pounds will be spent in the city and as the profile of the city dimises they will be less investment, businesses attracted, trained/educated people retained and ultimately a downward spiral to a deprived town with high unemployment and crime....sounds exagerrated? it's a very well know social pattern (broken window syndrome) which any council must surely be aware of. But we shouldn't be surprised by the longterm greed, we've had streets of empty shops long before the recession due to high rates as the council are to idiotic to see that nonvacant shops at lower rates brings in more money than being stood empty for years as the rates are so high and no-one wants to visit a derelict looking town. This is just crazyness and this greedy council are looking at running our city into the ground.”

“'Blatant personal attack'? Dear oh dear oh dear! Aw, did the nasty lady go printing all those slanderous truths about the poor ickle councillor?
Councillor Lee has attended LESS than 3 out 5 meetings this past year - FACT. Now, you all might think this is good enough, but where I come from it isn't. I expect my councillors to represent me at council meetings. How is Councillor Lee doing that if she's hardly ever there? If what she says about her shifts is true, then her work is preventing her from fully functioning as a councillor and she should do the decent thing and RESIGN. However, as we all know, doing the decent thing is anathema to lefties.
I see that the next council election is in 2010. This is excellent news, as it means I will have been resident here for over a year and will be eligible to run against her. Which I will, as part of my mission from God to purge this country of the left-wing menace. Coupled with the removal of Gormless Gordon's vile Labour Government, 2010 will be a good year.
You see, Councillor Lee, I play a tough game of politics, but I play fair and only deal with the truth. You can spin it all you want, but the fact is, the people of Carholme deserve better than you and I will make sure they know that.
May the best candidate - i.e. me - win.”

“i totally agree with John, it makes absolutely no sense what so ever, in this current climate we should be trying to encourage domestic tourism and trying to build businesses up and not tear them down!!! Paul: of course your going to say that if you are indeed related to Darren Grice, who i hope has sleepless nights over this!!! and i think this decision will haunt him and i intend to give him hell when i write my letter to him!!!! what an absolute joke, if Lincoln city council is being run by fat cats like him then Lincoln really does have no hope what so ever. Lincoln will soon go to the dogs. Grice and his little puppets are destroying what is a beautiful historic city, into a city with no facilities, no life, no future. Also can we please stop going on about attendance to meeting etc this isn't the point of the issue at hand at all. my thoughts go out to all the staff that have been affected by this decision, and hope that guilt of these people losing their jobs keeps Darren Grice awake at night, but i suppose his nice wod of cash will keep him warm at night .”
