A LINCOLNSHIRE fire expert is asking local businesses to get involved in a project aimed at delivering desperately needed fire safety advice to African children.

Later this year, Mark Bennett, 40, education officer at Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, will head to the remote district of Mityana in south Uganda to help young people learn about the dangers of fire.

"These dormitories have barred windows and often have no electricity or smoke alarms. This means that children turn to using candles to read at night and are kept warm by paraffin heaters. This combination has proved deadly and before the training came into force, deaths were a regular occurrence.

"I'm hoping that by travelling to the region and using my expertise as a fire education officer and my work leading the Lincoln branch of the Young Firefighters that I can really make a positive difference to the local communities"

He added: "As well as street collecting and bag packing in local supermarkets to raise funds, I'm appealing to local businesses to help support this project, so whether this is through donations or sponsorship – all is welcome."
