COUNTY residents are being given the chance to win a range of prizes by choosing to 'swap fags for swag' for this year's No Smoking Day.

The Phoenix Stop Smoking Service, in partnership with Smokefree Lincs Alliance, will be giving an extra incentive to quit to mark No Smoking Day, which is taking place on March 13.

Phoenix, which is part of Lincolnshire Community Health Services NHS Trust (LCHS), offers free, non-judgemental, expert advice on helping smokers to kick the habit.

Stephanie Heathcote, smoking cessation lead at LCHS, said: "This year we've embraced the theme 'swap Fags for Swag' by offering special prizes kindly donated by a number of companies for those who reach the four-week quit point.

"These special days out help highlight the financial benefits of giving up smoking. If someone smoking 20-a-day quits, the money they save can pay for a family cinema trip after just a week. In three months, it adds up to the same as a new laptop or flat screen television. Within a year, a holiday of a lifetime could be within their grasp."

Co-ordinator for Smokefree Lincs Alliance, Ros Watson, added: "Many people come to see us at our events and take the first steps towards a healthier life and becoming smoke free. And if you call into one of the health shops this March and give up cigarettes for four weeks, you could win a prize too.

"There are so many benefits to stopping smoking, and by using the Phoenix service, you won't be on your own. They offer help and support along the way and help you decide what the best approach is for you."

“Just looking at the photo of all those stubs makes me feel ill.

'And if you call into one of the health shops this March and give up cigarettes for four weeks, you could win a prize too.'

So you give up smoking for four weeks, win a prize and then smoke again. People should give up smoking for the one big prize, their improved health, not because of a competition. Giving up won't last unless the individual really wants to give up long term. It is very much like dieting or giving up alcohol.”
