UPDATE: 11am Economic leaders in districts across Lincolnshire have welcomed today’s news of a major investment in the county’s broadband network.

Around £4 million of the £48 million investment in fibre optic infrastructure has come from district councils.

Today, North Kesteven District Council was the first to issue a statement about the project.

Councillor Mrs Marion Brighton OBE said: “ This is great news for North Kesteven. We have many remote areas which will benefit from faster broadband – meaning better access to information and services. We are pleased to be working in partnership with the County Council in order to help our residents get online.”

Businesses and communities will benefit as Lincolnshire County Council and BT today revealed details of the planned roll-out.

The council has signed a contract with BT to build on the existing telecoms infrastructure in the county so up to 90 per cent of all properties should have access to superfast broadband by April 2016 – with the council aiming for everyone else to have access to at least 2Mb/s broadband.

The deal is the largest of its kind in the East Midlands and sixth largest nationally.

County councillor Kelly Smith, executive member for finance and HR said: “The internet is transforming our lives – at home, at work and at school.

“This project is going to dramatically improve broadband speeds across the county, bringing a wealth of opportunities for residents and businesses alike.”

ORIGINALThe first ever onlincolnshire digital conference takes place on March 13 between 8:30am and 12:30pm in Lincoln.

With the introduction of superfast 24MB/s broadband in Lincolnshire from 2013, the conference aims to educate businesses about the commercial opportunities in being part of a digital economy brings.

Some 250 local businesses and organisations will make up the audience at the Doubletree by Hilton.
