"Our announcement comes after comments from Colin Tweedy, vice-president of arts and business, who said that funding for the arts sector is too "London-centric" and is "failing to engage the majority of the British population".

Families will be encouraged to watch the performance, screened on Central Beach, and bring a picnic. A selection of front row beach deck chairs will be provided for the early arrivals and local restaurants and food stalls close by will be open during the evening.

General director of Garsington Opera, Anthony Whitworth-Jones, said: "We are delighted to have formed a link with the enterprising SO Festival at Skegness with our performance of La Périchole.

"It is a thrilling prospect that many more people will be able to enjoy this production which promises to be very lively and full of fun. We hope that this will be the start of a long and fruitful relationship."

The performance is a free event and will be broadcast by satellite at 7.45pm. There will be pre-show street theatre and music performances and the opera will be followed by a spectacular firework finale display over the sea.

Other recent additions to the SO Festival 2012 line-up include chart-topping indie-pop trio Scouting for Girls who will perform at the Embassy Theatre on June 30 and pop veteran Adam Ant who will take to the stage on July 1.
