LOUTH has been listed by a leading national newspaper as one of the best places to live in Britain.

After winning the BBC Countryfile vote as Britain's Favourite Market Town for 2012, Louth is now named by the Sunday Times as one of two Lincolnshire towns to qualify as a 'best place'.

The other is Stamford which gets the paper's top billing.

Eleanor Mills, who composed the survey of 101 best locations, says of Louth:  "A market town that still takes the 'market' bit seriously. Louth has open-air stalls piled high with local produce three times a week.  Eastgate is an excellent place to find real food, including several proper butchers.

"The town is sprinkled with delis, farm shops and cafes where fresh wholesome fare is on the menu."

Louth Town Partnership's coordinator, Samantha Phillips, welcomed the latest accolade.

She said: "Increasingly Louth is gaining national recognition for its traditional market town qualities, especially its food and shopping experience.

"We are up there with the best Britain can offer, and Eleanor Mills recognises this when she says that you don't have to be a millionaire to live somewhere wonderful. There a hundreds of unsung gems that offer the highest quality of life and value for money."

The survey took into account great shops, cultural attractions, crime statistics, school performance, life expectancy, house prices, transport links, proximity to Areas of Outstanding Beauty and community spirit.

Mayor of Louth, Councillor Jill Makinson-Sanders, said: "What a year it has been for Louth! The secret is out - something we have all known for ages but it's now official that Louth is one of the best places in the country to live."

“"no doubt soon to be ruined by a large influx of immigrants."

Let's face it, if you move into any town or village in Lincolnshire from a couple of miles away you're an 'immigrant'. Very welcoming people.”

“And how many people choose (rather than end up) living there?

Anybody from Countryfile, The Sunday Times or Eleanor Mills actually live in Louth?

I have chosen to live in Lincolnshire because I was raised here, not because it has a passing review from a journalist who has dropped in and was not held up by cows or sugar beet.”
