CANADIAN striker Gavin McCallum predicted Lincoln City would have sealed their first victory of the season, had his first half strike against Torquay not been ruled out for offside.

McCallum, one of six players making his home debut, pounced on an Albert Jarrett cross early in the first half but was pulled up by the assistant referee.

Shortly after that, Elliott Benyon converted Kevin Nicholson's free-kick to give the Gulls the lead and from then, the visitors never looked back and the hosts' heads dropped.

Benyon added a second 20 minutes from time to consign the Imps to the bottom of League Two after two games but McCallum reckoned the Imps would have made the game safe had his close range effort been allowed to stand.

"I thought it was onside and the lad behind me, Josh (O'Keefe), said I was onside too," said the summer recruit from Hereford.

"I was running away celebrating, so I thought it was in, and had it counted, it would have been a different game.

"I think we would have gone on to win the match 3-0 as we were on top and they could not get near us in the first half.

"Their first half goal changed the game, but it did not dent our confidence as we kept on going, although we didn't create as many chances in the second half."

McCallum has yet to open his account for Chris Sutton's side, having caught the eye of the 37-year-old during his spell at Edgar Street.

The 22-year-old scored eight goals in 27 appearances for the Bulls last season, including a brace against the Imps in Hereford's 2-0 home victory in February.

And the pacy frontman thinks he will get on the goal trail and also expects Lincoln to start firing soon.

"Everything will come right, this is just our bad patch," said the Ontario-born frontman.

"It is best to get that out of the way at the start although it would have been nice to score a goal on my home debut.

"We just need to keep going and everything will come right, it is just taking a bit of time to get there."

McCallum was brought off in the second half, along with strike partner Drewe Broughton, as Sutton looked to change the complexion of the game, introducing Andrew Hutchinson and Delroy Facey into the fray.

That pair impressed on their arrival and could be in line for first starts at Gillingham next Saturday, a team that have drawn their first two games of the season, following their relegation from League One.

"We need to get our heads down and look to get a result at Gillingham and I am looking for a win," said the striker.

“I agree that we played well and if we had a decent striker we would of been winning after half an hour. The problem is we don't have a striker. Broughton is not a goalscorer and he and mcCallum didn't have a very good understanding. Shouldn't Fagan be given a chance he can't be worse that the others.”

“Sorry Gavin, but I don't think its best to get your bad patch over at the start of the season! We now sit 92nd and are playing catch up, with a side that can't stop others scoring and finds it difficult to score themselves. Maybe your confidence won't be affected, but keep losing and defending like schoolboys and it sure will be like may supporters.
I certainly hope it can only get better from here, because if it doesn't then we will quickly be in deep trouble.

ps. Not knee jerk, just concern at our starkly bad start to the campaign.”
