MP Edward Leigh is backing a bid for a House of Commons debate in a campaign calling for an end to the freezing of pensions of people who retired abroad.

The veteran Gainsborough Parliamentarian is one of 14,000 signatories to an online petition launched by the International Consortium of British Pensioners.

A survey by the ICBP has revealed 53 per cent of 45 to 64-year- olds canvassed in the East Midlands would consider retiring abroad.

But Mr Leigh and other MPs want an end to the system where in 120 countries UK pensions remain frozen at the rate paid when they move overseas.

"Half of middle-aged people in the East Midlands consider retiring abroad," said Mr Leigh.

"But most are probably unaware that their pensions would be frozen if they moved to many of the most popular countries to retire to.

"What's more, British retirees relocating abroad lessens the burden on our public services in a time of need – and might actually save more money than is retained by freezing pensions.

“It is unworthy of us to decry the governments recent promise regarding how they will not let the Falklanders down in this latest sabre rattling from Argentina.
Excuse me Mr Cameron and co. you dont object to letting those BRITISH citizens living in the Falklands down by denying them the right to the full State Pension they are entitled to by virtue of their National Insurance contributions. It may well be that one day British service personnel that served and risked their lives in the last conflict may wish to retire there.
So its OK to say yes we can afford to have a war there. Surely its not OK to say that the government can not afford to pay them their full State Pensions!
Pensioners, now in their 90's that fought in WW11 now living in countries like Australia and Canada are only paid 60% of what they are entitled to. (or would get if they had remained in the UK or moved to the USA or Europe).
Every British Citizen in the UK should be "up in arms"Against this discrimination and sign the e-petition on the government web site to stop this, what could be described as, persecution. Not a nice word to be used when talking of WW11 era.
To get to the web site in your browser search type in http followed by a colon (:) then //bit.ly followed by / and then BritPensions Please sign the petition”

“Thankyou 'clivebali' for your welcome comment. Another comment made recently was that by the Prime Minister David Cameron who said he would use 2012 to convince people that he had a "vision at the end of this, of a fairer, better economy, a fairer, better society, where if you work hard and do the right thing you get rewarded". Well David, we all paid our taxes and National Insurance throughout our working lives and many like myself served their country in the armed forces, being placed in some dangerous situations by the politicians, not to mention being parted from our families and we constitute many if not most of those frozen pensioners as they would have done National service if they were not in regular service. So I guess that we get the reward David. You know that we should never have been deprived in the first place and the longer it goes on the more the politicians are showing that they really are only interested in themselves where pensions are concerned - how much has your future pension increased David over the 14 years that mine has been frozen ? You can put this right and do it at the next budget - it is not too late and if you really care a fig, you will make this happen.
There are no more lies to tell. Too many politicians have egg on their faces over their apathy and disinterest and lack of a sense of justice. We need questions to be raised again and again in the house until this totally bad discrimination is eradicated. It is illegal to discriminate but this and past governments break this law with impunity, check the Equality Act 2010 Mr Cameron. Did you all know that a British state pensioner in the Falklands has his/her pension frozen and they would spend billions to defend the rights of the Falklanders except for their pension rights. You could not make this up could you ? The game is up David, get your eraser out and delete the regulation that freezes our pension”

“to georgemor. Since when has Parliament accepted a valid reason to do something! 60years of frozen pensions is their valid reason for continuing to discriminate against those 4% of pensioners!
For many, many years of the Department of Works and Pensions, (DWP) has always stated that up-rating can only operate where there is a legal requirement such as with the EU or where there is a Reciprocal Agreement, (RA). Earlier last year I challenged that statement through my MP and as a result the DWP then changed their "standard reply" of many years standing to admit that up-rating can be achieved by local legislation, (a vote in Parliament), and an RA was not necessary.
Looking back over the years a number of MPs and Lords on questioning the Government were under the impression that the RA was necessary to up-rate pensions, and accepted the DWPs reply that RA were "problematical" and there was no other method of up-rating available. (of course the DWP did not enlighten them with the truth when offering their replies. Probably because they also were not aware of the true facts of up- rating!).
In the 1997 Select Committee report, Item 39 clearly states that an RA is not necessary and a simple change in British law could enable uprating to be paid in any or all overseas countries.). It would seem that many MPs have forgotten that report. Also it seems has the DPW
HELP THE AGED they say. Please help those aged, frozen pensioners by signing the petition at null you dont have to be a pensioner to sign. All British Citizens can sign to support those 4% of pensioners so discriminated against.”

“I was most pleased to see this article and especially grateful to Edward Leigh MP for highlighting this issue which has been going on for much too long. Many pensioners abroad are now struggling due to this policy and poverty is on the horizon if they are not there already. To short change these pensioners (approx 4 %) whilst paying the uprated pension to all of the others ( approx 96 % ) worldwide is just so unBritish that I had trouble believing that thai was true until I became one of them. I now spend some time trying to get justice for myself and the others trapped in this situation which can be solved by parliament and there really is no valid reason for it to continue.”
