He was convicted of two assaults after trial and pleaded guilty to criminal damage on a previous date.
In February, Rooney, of Kemble Close, Birchwood, turned up at his ex-partner's home and, after she told him to leave, he grabbed her by the throat and pushed her onto a bed, the court heard.
He butted his ex before punching her in the back.
Jim Clare, prosecuting, said in a police statement the woman said: "He said he was coming back and said 'if you try to stop me I will kill you both'.
Ali Zaki, mitigating, said: "This has left him with problems and he has not seen his daughter for six months.
"He suffers with depression and other mental health issues.
"He says he wants some help in terms of learning how to deal with male/ female relationships."
Rooney was given an 18- month community order with a supervision requirement.
