A DRUNKEN labourer left his girlfriend needing four stitches in her hand after trapping it with a door, a court heard.

Dean Gibson, 29, of Coleridge Green, Lincoln, admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm on bank holiday Monday and possession of a quantity of cannabis when he appeared before Lincoln magistrates.

In mitigation, Sunnil Khanna said his client had been drinking and if not drunk would not have grabbed the door from his girlfriend as violently.

"He should have known her hand was still in the door," he said.

Mr Khanna went on to tell the court that, after the incident, Gibson had attempted to stem the victim's bleeding and was at the hospital while she was treated.

"Also, when police arrested him, despite giving himself up willingly, he was bitten on the leg by a police dog," said Mr Khanna.

The case was adjourned to September 23, for a pre-sentence report to be carried out, and Gibson was remanded into custody.
