He said: "The New York marathon is the best one in the World. The hardest parts are at 16 -18 miles as you pass through Brooklyn and cross over the river on the Queensborough Bridge. It's an old bridge and they put carpets over the grills to make it easier.

"Then into First Avenue, you have a long straight for three to four miles and that's hard because you are going uphill slightly.

"I have had problems with my foot but that's sorted now, although my sciatic nerve has been bothering me so I have done about 30 to 40 miles a week.

"I know I can do it but I want to do it in five hours to give me a qualifying time for the London Marathon.

"Once you get in the race it's the atmosphere that gets you going."
