THE security of a long-term contract convinced Mark Jones to swap Boston United for arch-rivals Gainsborough Trinity.

Jones penned an 18-month deal with the Blues over the weekend after scoring an impressive 14 goals for the Pilgrims this season.

If the wintry weather persists this weekend, Jones could make his Gainsborough debut against Boston when the sides meet at the Northolme on February 2.

"The offer of a contract and the security that comes with it was the main reason for my decision," said Jones.

"Boston United were not able to give me a contract or were not prepared to.

"There has been a lot said about the move coming about because it was a massive offer, but that has been blown right out of proportion.

"It is just a normal amount, not much more than I was on at Boston, but the idea of having a contract was the deciding factor."

Jones revealed Pilgrims boss Graham Drury fought to keep him at the Jakemans Stadium and praised the former Corby Town manager.

"To be fair, Graham Drury has been great with me since he came to the club," added Jones, who also thanked the Boston fans.

"He fought all he could to keep me at Boston, even going as far as offering me an improved wage using his own money.

"I enjoyed my time at Boston and I made some good friends there.

"The Boston fans were always excellent with me and I have received some great comments from them, even since my move to Trinity.

"But now I have moved on and I just want to continue scoring goals for Gainsborough Trinity."
