Market Rasen & Louth set for top-of-the-table showdown
Simon Green admits tomorrow's clash at Coalville is win or bust for Market Rasen & Louth's title hopes.
A highly competitive three-way title race in Midlands Two East (North) has left Rasen and Spalding trailing leaders Coalville by two points.
The Red & Greens could still win promotion through a play-off – should they finish second – but Green and his players want to repeat their heroics of last year, when they claimed the league championship crown of Midlands Four East (North).
The formbook makes for pleasant reading, too, as Rasen can point to a 34-10 home victory against Coalville in December, becoming the first team to defeat the Leicestershire side this season.
However, while Green has backed his players to complete a league double he is acutely aware that defeat would spell the end for dreams of the championship.
"Coalville already have one hand on the title but I really believe we can win," said Green (pictured left).
"We have to win tomorrow to give ourselves a chance of clinching the league.
"I cannot see Coalville or Spalding losing another game and, if we were to lose, we would have to win all of our remaining games to get a play-off spot against the second-placed team in the southern division.
"It's very much a one-off game but the nice thing is when they came down to us we beat them fairly comprehensively.
"It was a good game, although our defence was better which proved key.
"We are heading into the game with a little bit of confidence.
"The players are working hard on eliminating lapses of concentration but I think in the second half of the season we've really evolved in terms of our playing style and we've got really strong."
The game pits the division's most potent attacking force versus Rasen's watertight defence, an intriguing battle.
"We take great pride in the fact our defence is one of the best nationally, and we want to maintain that tomorrow," said Green.
"If we win then it really puts the pressure on when Coalville go to Melton Mowbray, which is a real derby match.
"Our players must earn the right to play and put on the pressure.
"Defensively we are good, but we must ensure that we are within a score or even leading by half-time.
"I'm aware their full-back is exceptional and furnishes both the centres, who can do damage when they run with the ball.
"Because of the threat they pose we have altered out selection to counter one or two things – and we remain confident we can win the match.
"I'm a big believer the best team over the course of a season wins the title."
Rasen still have an injury concern over Pete Everton for the game at Coalville.
Also in Midland Two East (North), Sleaford, who are second-bottom in the table, travel to promotion contenders Spalding.
