MARKET RASEN Racecourse will launch the search for a young jockey who will be the new Tom Halliday Scholar at its meeting tomorrow.

Through the annual award, which is in its sixth year, a rising jockey is sponsored by the racecourse and receives support and advice in areas such as schooling, nutrition and media training.

The award is named in memory of Tom Halliday, who died in 2005 at the age of 20 after a fall at the Lincolnshire track.

At tomorrow's meeting the racecourse will ask the public, as well as racing professionals, to nominate suitable candidates.

Previous Tom Halliday Memorial Scholars are Phil Kinsella (2005), Michael O'Connell (2006), David Culinane (2007), James Halliday (2008); and Oliver Williams (2009).

James Halliday, Tom's brother, will be in action at the course tomorrow. He will be riding 8-1 shot Choctaw Nation in the opening race, the Jack South Memorial Handicap Hurdle, then will be onboard 9-2 shot Lola Jay in the final race of the day, the Turftv Intermediate Open NH Flat Race.

The racecourse's managing director, Pip Kirkby, said: "This year's scholar, Oliver Williams, whose exploits have included riding a 100-1 winner at Huntingdon Racecourse, has used his award to help him along the road to his ambition to train racehorses one day.

"And two of the happiest days here in the last year have seen Tom's brother James ride his first double and then go even better and record his first treble, with his proud parents watching on.

"Everyone at the racecourse has been delighted with the success of this award as a positive memorial to Tom."

Anyone is welcome to send in a nomination. They should be sent by email to pip.kirkby@jockeyclubracecourses.com or by letter to Market Rasen Racecourse, Legsby Road, Market Rasen, LN8 3EA.

The closing date for nominations is Friday, September 17. The name of the new scholar will be announced on the first day of the high profile Equinox Meeting on Saturday, September 25.

Meanwhile, Champion jockey Tony McCoy has a several rides at Rasen tomorrow, including 9-4 favourite Yellow Flag in the £10,000 feature race, the Watch Racing UK On Sky Channel 432 Handicap Chase.

The Jonjo O'Neill-trained seven-year-old won at Uttoxeter and Hereford last month.

McCoy will also be looking to make it a hat-trick of wins for Space Telescope in the Ladies Night Is Next 14th August Handicap Hurdle, following two wins at Worcester in June.
