Market losing council money
CONTROVERSY over stall occupancy levels at Louth market bubbled up at a full meeting of East Lindsey District Council.
Councillor George Horton disputed suggestions that the long-established market was enjoying a renaissance.
He said the number of vacant stalls in September had been 170, resulting in a loss of rental income to the authority of an estimated £2,193.
"What are we doing to fill these stalls on a permanent basis?" he demanded.

Portfolio holder for economic regeneration Councillor Craig Leyland conceded that empty stalls "created a missed income opportunity and gave a poor appearance to the market".
He said that the authority was addressing the situation by introducing a new book-and-pay arrangement which would come into force in the coming weeks.
By collecting rent in advance, he said ELDC could expect both to secure income and to ensure fewer vacant stalls.
