Methadone 'vending machine' at prison
Drug addicts at Lincoln Prison can receive methadone via a "vending machine" system because of a new Government initiative.
The Greetwell Road prison is one of 57 prisons to have the machines, which allows a nurse to access the drug via fingerprint or iris recognition, keeping the drugs sealed away to anyone else.

This will be part of a wider rehabilitation programme operating within the prison.
Head of healthcare at HMP Lincoln Rita Ahmet said: "This is part of an integrated drug treatment service.
"It is a national programme for the safe dispensing of the medication.
"It uses iris recognition technology in order to make sure the right individual is getting the right medication."
The Government plan to role the machines out to 70 of the 140 prisons in England and Wales, at a cost of £4 million.

“It's no wonder this country's going to the dogs. Bring back hanging for people who steal Xmas decorations from overpriced hotels, I say!”

“"When they are released they will go back to their families and no doubt, the same temptations and old dyed in the wool ways. Once a con always a con."
You have a very narrow minded attitude to criminality. Was it your son who stole decorations from the White Hart hotel one Christmas? And if he had been caught and sent to prison would you be here twittering on about bread and water. Hmm? Everyone has broken the law. Not everyone gets caught. You think on....”

“The biggest crooks are people like our MP's who get away with it, and it's not peanuts either. I bet none of them will be eating anything less than steak and drinking Moet if they get 'sent down ' (which I'll believe when I see it). Our prisons should really be full of 'upper class twits' but they're too clever to be caught or know a man who can.”

“people make wrong decisions every day of their lives to some people the consequences prove more severe than to others. Do not judge all prisoners by what you read in the media do not class them all as scum would you like your brother, father, sister, mother, aunt or cousin classed as that because of a wrong descision they may have made only once. I do hope that all of you saying that they should live on bread and water do not do something stupid like drive above the speed limit and kill a helpless person and then end up in prison because, you know what there will be people like yourselves saying you should be living on bread and water. All of you commenting like this live a sheltered life and need to get your head out of the clouds and realise these are human beings just like yourselves!”

“Lesley - Most of the prisoners are dopes anyway, or they wouldn't be incarcerated in the first place. I agree with fatuesque's comments, let them have gruel, and as a treat bread and water. When they are released they will go back to their families and no doubt, the same temptations and old dyed in the wool ways. Once a con always a con. As tish says there is the odd exception to the rule, look no further than Mr Archer.”

“They should be made to go cold turkey and eat nothing but gruel in a cell with nothing but a toilet and a bed.
I know of many people that actually prefer being in prison than being outside as they are surrounded by the people they would surround themself with on the outside anyway and dont have to work, pay rent and they are nannied.”

“*sighs*
"If they're drugged up to the eyeballs every day, it makes for an easier life for the screws. I'm all for that. "
And when these doped up prisoners are released you would expect them to have magically learnt their lessons do you?”

“I think it is a good idea get them clean inside and they'll be clean outside. Those of you who descripe prison as luxury needs to get yourself booked in to one and then comment but then again you are all entitled to your own opinion just a bit pathetic when you have no real knowledge on the matter. Mum of 3 i think you need to contact your councillor if you have strong feelings like about those sorts of issues it will not make any difference commenting on this website”

“There is a disparity here between addictions. Some prisioners may be alcoholics, are they going to get a free bar, you know, whisky, vodka etc. If they're drugged up to the eyeballs every day, it makes for an easier life for the screws. I'm all for that.”
