Motorists are being warned to brace themselves for major disruption as roadworks are due to start on one of Lincoln's busiest roads.

But the county highways department is promising less congestion and better crossing facilities for cyclists and pedestrians once the work at four junctions in Tritton Road is complete.

Work begins at the junction of Moorland Way on Monday next week and is expected to last seven weeks.

Road widening at the junctions of Doddington Road and Skellingthorpe Road to help improve southbound traffic flows will then follow from between August and late October.

And during this period improvements will be made to the Moorland Avenue junction and at the Sainsbury's supermarket entrance.

The works come on the back of the store expansion, with the county council seizing the chance to bring forward other upgrades.

The supermarket giant is forking out four-fifths of the £500,000 price tag with the county council footing the rest of the bill.

Senior highways officer Dave Underwood said there would inevitably be some road closures but Tritton Road would remain open and traffic controlled by temporary lights.

Motorists are, however, advised to allow extra time for journeys and consider diversions via the bypass and Newark Road.

The supermarket will stay open throughout.

Gary Hill, 68, an observer for the Lincoln Institute Of Advanced Motorists, of Chippendale Road, Birchwood, said he felt the improvements would result in less frustrating delays.

"It will be much better and less frustrating if traffic flow towards Newark Road can be improved by the works at the Doddington Road and Skellingthorpe Road junctions," he said.

“When the first section of Tritton road was built in the mid 1960's it was stated that it would eventually be "Dual carriageway for it's entire length".

There's no wonder there is so much congestion and frustration on this road, like so many in Lincolnshire, it's incomplete. Hopefully the council will now get on with doing what they promised almost 45 Years ago.”

“"The whole point is that we shouldn't be building shops alongside dual carriageways - we should be building them in setting fit for human beings. People and big roads don't mix."

Don't be absurd. People shopping at supermarkets and electrical stores are going to need a car to take their goods home.”

“"A lousy comparison, one involves crossing a pedestrian precinct and the other two roads with a total of eight lanes of traffic"

That's kind of the point I was making, McDonald. The whole point is that we shouldn't be building shops alongside dual carriageways - we should be building them in setting fit for human beings. People and big roads don't mix.”

“Andy - Thanks for info. I'm still in the dark, what do they sell?
It looks a huge store! The more the merrier on that site, looks as if Gratton has disappeared, as also MFI. Definitely needs some some new life breathing into the area.”
