Mystery buyer for medieval village site
The site of a former medieval Lincolnshire village has sold at auction for £75,000.
The scheduled monument fetched the asking price when it went under the hammer at the JH Walter sale yesterday.
But mystery surrounds the new owner of the site at Orford, between Binbrook and Brookenby, near Market Rasen, who made anonymous bids during the sale via a solicitor.
Sales negotiator James Mulhall from JH Walter said: "We didn't expect significantly high level of interest because that are of area of land is probably better suited to specific purchaser rather than someone who had aspirations to do something with it.
"We are extremely pleased with the sale of land in what was a very successful auction where 19 of 21 lots were sold. This proves the market is alive."
The Echo reported last month the land was to be auctioned off at the Bentley Hotel, in South Hykeham.
The 22.57 acre site is currently used for grazing cattle set in a Lincolnshire Wolds valley that forms part of an area of outstanding natural beauty.
Details of what will happen to the fields, trees and beck is unclear, although it is unlikely any kind of housing development would be given by planning officials.
