The red Renault Megane appears to have left the road before the driver's side smashed into a tree in a field, police said. The vehicle then rolled onto its side.
It is thought the accident happened shortly before the passing motorist discovered the vehicle at 4.45am yesterday morning.
Sergeant Craig Dunderdale, from Lincolnshire Police, said: "A female single occupant was in the car, travelling to work in North Hykeham.
"The vehicle failed to negotiate a left-hand bend and has collided with a tree, resulting in fatal injuries.
"It is believed that not long after the collision, a member of the public came across the scene and contacted the police. Officers arrived at 4.58am."
The unnamed local woman was driving south-bound towards the A158 when the accident happened. Emergency services pronounced the woman dead at the scene.
There were no other cars discovered near to where she was found, but officers are calling for anyone who may have been in the area to come forward.
The road was closed down when police arrived on scene at 5am and was shut for the majority of yesterday while officers carried out inspections of the area.
Anyone with information on the Wickenby accident is asked to call the collision witness hotline on (01522) 558855.
