Thanks to their popularity, the bowls club was presented with £500 and a certificate on Saturday towards mats for their indoor bowls games at The Venue, Navenby's new community hall.

Mrs Overton said: "Navenby Bowls Club is very popular locally and I'm delighted that they came top in my leaflet poll. The club has been hugely successful over a number of years and its members are always friendly and welcoming to visitors and players. They also provide superb home-made refreshments."

Every household in the area received a hand-delivered leaflet inviting them to nominate and vote for their favourite local club in need of help and more than 200 people responded.

Mrs Overton added: "The £500 came from money that the councillors chose not to take when it was received by the independent panel. Instead we chose to put it into a pot and allocated a small amount through committee groups who had use for an extra bit of funding and then for this £500 we let the local people decide how it was spent."

Mary Welbourne, secretary of Navenby Bowls Club said: "We recently invested in three new carpets for carpet bowls, at a total cost of £1,600, so Cllr Overton's grant is very welcome. The new carpets have proven to be very popular, with growing numbers joining our indoor bowls sessions over the winter.

"The carpets will continue being used over summer, as some members prefer to keep playing indoor bowls, while others will switch to outdoor bowls.

"We welcome young people, and we attract quite a few elderly people to our club, as they find bowls a suitable and enjoyable sport. It's very sociable too, and helps people to keep active."
