NEUTERING CAMPAIGN: Cat owners in the Sleaford area who are on a low income can have their cat neutered for £10 for a limited time only.

Louise Blackah, co-ordinator for Sleaford and District Cats Protection said: “We would ideally like to be able to offer this to hundreds of people who may not ordinarily be able to afford to have their cat neutered.

“We try to offer this scheme a couple of times a year but Spring is an important time to do it because this is when the females are coming into season.”

By having a cat neutered this can stop unwanted kittens; make a cat less likely to fight, thus reducing the risk of catching life-threatening diseases transmitted by bites and saliva and make a cat less likely to wander and get run over.

Cats Protection believes neutering is an essential part of responsible cat ownership and neuters more than 176,000 cats and kittens nationally each year. The charity recommends that cats and kittens are neutered from four months of age.

Depending on the vet, the cost to have a female cat neutered is approximately £50 and for a male to be castrated is approximately £42 so with the £10 offer a significant amount of the cost can be reduced.

Louise added: “Over the past few years the amount of requests we get in from people asking us to take in cats is increasing and if we haven’t got the space there’s the fear that they will be dumped and keep breeding so it’s a vicious cycle.

“We have however been able to re-home more cats lately through our Facebook site which is really good news. The faster we can get the cats out and into new homes the better all round.”
