Local reaction to new Pope Jorge Mario Bergoglio from Argentina
LOCAL REACTION: The Bishop of Lincoln, the Right Reverend Christopher Lowson, welcomes the appointment of Pope Francis.
He said: "The election of a new Pope is a wonderful occasion for the Roman Catholic Church and the Christian world as a whole. This newly-elected Pope brings to the 1.2 billion Roman Catholics worldwide a renewed sense of hope and purpose as they are led into the future.
"Jorge Mario Bergoglio, now Pope Francis, is known to live very simply and to have a committed approach to poverty. While the world is dealing with its financial crisis, such an appointment has to be greatly welcomed.
"The Diocese of Lincoln will continue to hold the new Pope and our Roman Catholic brothers and sisters in prayers."

The Right Reverend Malcolm McMahon, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Nottingham, which covers Lincolnshire, said: “I welcome very much the election of Pope Francis.
“As a priest and a bishop, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio has amassed a great wealth of pastoral experience which he can now share with the universal church.
“St Francis of Assisi is reputed to have said: ‘Proclaim the Gospel always and if necessary use words.’ I am sure that Pope Francis will spread the good news of Jesus Christ in all that he says and does, using his words wisely to promote in particular the church’s social teaching, giving a message of peace and justice which the world needs to hear more than ever.
“The Catholics of the Diocese of Nottingham join their brothers and sisters throughout the world, Christians of other traditions, and people of all faiths and none in congratulating Pope Francis and praying for him, that he may have a long, blessed and joyful ministry as Successor of Saint Peter.”
Malcolm Barham, chief executive of Lincolnshire YMCA, said: “The fact that he’s chosen the name Pope Francis seems to show a clear link to St Francis of Assisi whose famous quote was ‘Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary used words’.
“From our perspective as a faith-based organisation, involved in social activities, we welcome such a connection.”
Jorge Mario Bergoglio, 76, from Argentina, has been named as the new Pope amd will be known as Pope Francis.
He succeeds Pope Benedict XVI was elected in April 2005 and resigned last month aged 85.
Pope Benedict cited to a "lack of strength of mind and body" due to his age.
Father John Kyme, parish priest at St Hugh's RC Church, in Monks Road, Lincoln, said: "It's a very exciting moment.
"It's momentous in the history of the church and there's always that great sense of excitement over who the new Pope will be."
As a cardinal, His Holiness became known for his humility, conservatism, and his commitment to social justice.
He is said to have lived in a small apartment rather than in a palatial bishop's residence.
He gave up his chauffured limo in favour of public transport and regularly cooks his own meals.
He was the arch bishop of Buenos Aires since 1998.

“I would imagine Catholics across the world view Pope Francis's appointment with a sense of optimism, certainly, the faithful I have spoken to so far seem to think so, as does the Anglican Bishop of Lincoln. Yes, the Catholic church has been dogged by controversy. But perhaps Pope Francis is the man to unite the faithful and rid the church of its demons.
What does everyone else think? What do Catholics think? Why not join the debate?”
