New fleet of gritters signals countdown to winter in Lincolnshire
FINAL checks are taking place to ensure Lincolnshire's gritters are ready for whatever this winter has to offer.
A total of 15 new replacement gritters will arrive in the county in the next fortnight with five of the new 26 tonne Mercedes Schmidt vehicles based at Boston Chainbridge.
And to make sure Lincolnshire County Council's team is prepared for the winter season, the annual 'shake down run' will be taking place in the next couple of weeks to test procedures.
Executive member for Highways and Transportation, councillor William Webb said: "We don't want people to think we know something about the weather that they don't.

"This 'shake down run' is something our gritter drivers do every year while the sun is still shining to make sure their vehicles are in top condition with no further maintenance needed and also to check their gritting routes are clear."
In total, 15 Mercedes Schmidt gritters will be shared between Boston Chainbridge, Horncastle and Pode Hole highways depots and three smaller 10-tonne DAF gritters at Manby, Boston Chainbridge and Sturton.
Gritter Twitter is also back online, ready to start sharing live updates as the temperatures fall.
Mr Webb added: "They always have one last run through before winter weather begins.
"If you do see our gritters when you're out and about, do feel free to give the drivers a wave.
"They do a tremendous job by helping to keep us moving on the roads."
Just over a third of the county's roads are salted, including all A and B roads.
Each gritter has its own specific route exceeding government expectations.
Councillor Webb added: "Our Gritter Twitter is also back again, so please do make the most of it and sign up for 'real time' information.
"This is something we launched last year that was really successful, with almost 1,000 followers at its height."
