Once dismissed as the item of the past, vinyl appears to making a comeback among Lincoln music fans.

The good news for vinyl junkies is that a new shop called Back to Mono opened last week in The Mall, off High Street, Lincoln, selling classic albums and singles and new releases with not a CD in sight.

The business is owned by Jim Penistan, 38, formerly of Sonic Sounds record shop, which closed at the end of 2006 after 17 years.

As reported in the Echo, new figures show Lincolnians have on average bought just 1.17 albums in the first nine months of this year.

This is blamed on many young music fans are now picking and choosing tracks on the internet instead of buying whole albums.

But Mr Penistan said there was still a demand for classic records on vinyl as well as new releases in the same format, which is said to give listeners a warmer sound than CDs or tracks downloaded via iPods.

"At Sonic Sounds we got to stage where we began selling on eBAY and Amazon because people were not coming in for new releases due to cheaper downloads and keener prices in supermarkets," he said.

"What has kept the demand for vinyl going over the years has been dance music in the 1990s and then more recently bands like The White Stripes and The Strokes issuing new releases on vinyl.

"A lot of classic albums are also being reissued on vinyl.

"We are selling new releases on 180 gram vinyl which is a heavy duty vinyl.

"I know from attending record fairs that there is still a huge demand and that for many it's more popular than CDs."

“There's and depth to analogue recordings that you don't get with noughts and ones. Just a shame it's normally hidden behind a load of hissing! Nothing like the feel of a 'proper' album though. Good luck to Jim.”

“It's a good sign of the times that the opening of a shop selling vinyl records is worthy of news. The format is outdated and horrible to listen to, regardless what you fogies think!”

“Good Luck Jim on a worthwhile venture.”

“Good luck to you, I hope it works out. There is nothing quite like the feeling you used to get as a kid going home with a new album to play. You could spend ages just looking over the cover before getting the glossy black disc out and placing it on the turntable. Once again, good luck with your new venture.”
